Beginner's Guide to Learning Golf This Winter

By Kevin Kraus

Are you one of those people who keep telling themselves they are going to learn how to play golf, but never get around to it? Or maybe you are like many who get frustrated and give up. There is no better time than now learn the fundamentals of golf and be prepared to conquer any course next season. After all, you wouldn't want to be the only one of your friends who doesn't play, would you?

By now, I hope you are interested in learning golf this off-season. There are a few fundamental rules of golf that you should learn prior to taking your first swing. First, let us understand the grip. A lot of beginning golfers have a tendency to hold a golf club similar to the way they would hold a baseball bat. This is known as the "10 finger" grip. Establishing a proper golf grip will be pivotal to learning golf this off-season, and can be done in the comfort of your home. There are two grips in golf, the interlock grip and overlap grip. Both involve your index and pinky fingers either interlocking or overlapping and give you much greater control of the golf club than a 10 finger grip would.

The next step to learning golf this off-season will be making a proper golf swing. Depending on your height and weight, the proper golf swing could be a mixture of what others interpret as "proper." As a general rule, the proper golf swing utilizes a combination of legs, hips, shoulders, and arms to create a fluid motion back and through the ball. Your legs and hips will be the primary sources of power in your swing, while your shoulders and arms will determine the path your ball takes during flight. An especially important concept to recognize in your studies of learning golf is to resist the urge to slap at the ball with your wrists. Rather, allow your shoulder to drive through the ball. To learn more about these concepts, I strongly recommend The Simple Golf Swing System by the Golf Swing Guru, David Nevgot. His step-by-step golf guide will prepare you to challenge your most experienced friends on the golf course.

Lastly, one more concept to grasp while learning golf this off-season is golf etiquette. Familiarizing yourself with the rules of golf etiquette will do numbers to impress your playing partners. Golf etiquette includes notions of appropriate attire, when it's your turn to play your shot, speed of play, knowing the basic rules of golf, and common golf courtesy. There are many other notions of golf etiquette, but focus on those basic concepts for now. I wish you the best of luck in learning golf this off-season!
